5 Changes that Help Maintain Temperature in Your House

Maintaining a comfortable temperature in your home is important not only for your own comfort, but to also save on your home energy bills. If your home does not stay consistently at the temperature you want it to, there are a number of things you can do to help keep the temperature steady. Here are three of the top changes you can make today to get your home temps back on track.

Sealing Windows and Doors
If you live in a climate where winters can be harsh, you may notice that in some rooms there is a cold draft no matter how high you turn your furnace up. These drafts often come through cracks and broken seals in your home’s windows and doors. Sometimes this is due to the age of the house, or it can be due to poor construction. In either case, you can have the doors and windows resealed to keep that cold air out. If the problem persist, especially around older window panes, you can either have the window replaced or seal it in plastic during the winter months.

Having Proper Insulation
Another place where air can escape and cause temperature variations is through the walls and the ceiling. If you have an older home, you may not have all of the insulation you need to proper heat and cool your home. Insulation helps to maintain a more consistent temperature inside the house by trapping the air from the furnace or air conditioner. The less that escapes the better you will be able to control indoor temperature.

Changing Air Filters
The air filters in your heating and air conditioning systems play an important role in the overall function of the systems. The air filter is used to trap dust and dirt from getting into the system, as well as keeping this dust and grime from floating around in the air. If the filters are not changed regularly, the dirty filter can bog down the system, making your furnace or air conditioner work harder than it has to. With clean filters, your system will be much more efficient.

Use Windows
You may look at windows as a way the heat is escaping, but if your windows are properly insulated this should be the opposite. When the sun is facing your window be sure to draw back the curtains. Even in the winter the sun will naturally warm your house. At night be sure to close the curtains to keep the heat in.

Use Technology
There are so many gadgets these days that are designed to help heat and cool your home. Smart thermostats will help you maintain the heat in your home even when you aren’t there. You can even program them to your smart phone so you will be able to turn up the heat a few minutes before you come home at the end of the day. This way you can come home to a warm house, but not have it on high all day while you aren’t there.

Keeping a constant temperature in your house will make your home comfortable for you, your family and your wallet.
